We think children learn best outside. Our program is nature-focused with extensive outdoor activities, and we look for a strong commitment to outdoor education in everyone who teaches here. Teachers for every age group are highly trained. We serve children from 6 weeks to 5 years, and we are licensed for 59 children.
In the rooms, that means children spend real time outdoors and teachers join them there. Playgroups in Tunbridge and Thetford bring families together for outdoor play, interactive story time, hands-on crafts, songs, and games. Teachers meet each age where it is, from the youngest babies to children heading to kindergarten. Home visits and parent education extend the same support to families.
Every lead teacher holds a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education and Vermont ECE certification, with at least three years of teaching experience in early childhood settings. Directors bring at least two years of supervisory or leadership experience in ECE. We are one of fifteen Vermont Parent Child Centers, serving 15 Central Vermont towns. Staff complete Vermont Agency of Education background checks, including fingerprinting, and state-mandated trainings.
What you notice in practice
Teachers follow the child. They get down at eye level, watch what a child is working on, and join in rather than direct. Because our program is nature-focused, much of that happens outdoors. Small groups let teachers notice what each child needs. Home visiting and playgroups carry the same approach into the community.
Rooms open onto the outdoors, and teachers carry the day's learning out there. Expect extensive outdoor activities, whatever the season, with teachers trained for every age group. A nature-focused program needs adults who believe in outdoor education, and that commitment shapes how the hours are paced. Families who want the specifics for their child's age can ask during a visit.
How we work with families
Our work brings family support into homes and communities across Orange County, meeting families where it is convenient and comfortable for them. Beyond early education, we offer home visiting, parent education, playgroups, concrete supports, community development, and information and referral. Families can ask questions at pickup or any time. We also invite families to take our Participation, Satisfaction, and Family Survey.
We hold an especially deep commitment to serving the whole family. That means access to resources and programs that help through short-term transitions and long-term supports. For a new child, home visits and parent education help the family and teachers know each other before the first day. Playgroups give parents and children a gentle way to get familiar.
